There are many potential ways of generating electricity.  Currently in Montserrat, all the electricity we use is made by feeding diesel into large internal-combustion engines which then turn turbines to generate electricity.  However, alternative technologies that we could consider include:

Biomass Geothermal Small Hydro
Solar Thermal Solar PV Wind

UNEP has also produced a useful document outlining the linked issues of science, technology, and policy:

 "Natural Selection: Evolving Choices for
Renewable Energy Technology and Policy".

Closer to home, Prof Paul Younger of Newcastle University recently (February 2006) completed an preliminary analysis of the technical feasibility and likely costs of developing Geothermal Power on Montserrat:

Geothermal Power on Montserrat - Paul Younger report Feb06

And though not strictly renewable energy technologies, two key technologies that affect the development of renewable energy are: Fuel Cells, and Cogeneration (sometimes called combined heat and power or CHP).  Click on the link to read the UNEP fact sheet.
